Cake é uma das bandas mais relevantes dos anos 90. O quinteto, oriundo de Sacramento, Califórnia, conta em sua formação com John McCrea (vocais, violão, piano), Vince DiFiore (trompete, teclados, backing vocals) , Xan McCurdy ( guitarra, backing vocals), Gabe Nelson (baixo, backing vocals) e Paulo Baldi  (bateria, percussão, backing vocals).  Em 2011 eles celebraram 20 anos de carreira com o lançamento do seu material mais recente, o 6º de estúdio, intitulado "Showroom Of Compassion" que recebeu excelentes críticas e atingiu o primeiro lugar no Top 200 álbuns da Billboard. Aliás, uma das curiosidades sobre este álbum é que foi produzido de forma independente.

As principais características da banda são melodias bem trabalhadas e letras repletas de sarcasmo, como a citar "Short skirt / Long Jacket" do disco "Comfort Eagle" (2001) ou a mais nova "Sick Of You". Cake se prepara para se apresentar no Lollapalooza Brasil 2013 e quem nos conta mais sobre a história , novo trabalho e expectativa em voltar ao Brasil é o trompetista Vince DiFiore. Confira:


FRS: A banda celebrou o aniversário de 20 anos, qual foi o momento mais marcante em sua carreira?

Vincent DiFiore: Quando Julia Roberts said " Eu amo CAKE," no The Late Show with David Letterman.

FRS: Eu li uma entrevista na qual vocês disseram "Cada álbum, nós ficamos melhores e talvez um pouco mais agressivos no nosso estilo". O que vocês fazem para se manterem atuais e verdadeiros com o estilo da banda?

Vincent DiFiore: Nós percebemos que somos tão bons quanto o nosso álbum mais recente. Temos a consciência que devemos ser criativos com ritmo e melodia, então nos focamos nisso. Somos também muito cuidados em manter um equilíbrio em todas as coisas. 

FRS: Para o seu último álbum "Showroom of Compassion" (2011)  vocês decidiram montar seu próprio estúdio em Sacramento. Houve mais liberdade para trabalhar com a melodia e as letras?

Vincent DiFiore: Não nos permitimos nos tornar excessivamente auto-indulgentes. O processo continuou o mesmo, mas nós apenas tivemos mais tempo para terminar o que começamos.

FRS: Quais foram as principais influências para este álbum? 

Vincent DiFiore: Isso é difícil responder porque nós trazemos nossas próprias influências, mas o estilo de composição de John é algo que eu hesito em especular. Honestamente, eu não consigo definir. 

FRS: Como se sentiram quando "Showroom of Compassion" alcançou #1 no 200 álbuns da Billboard em uma semana de estreia?

Vincent DiFiore: Celebramos nosso status de  #1. Foi bom ser o centro das atenções nas pesquisas por uma semana. 

FRS: Algo que eu sempre quis perguntar é sobre a versão do Cake para a música  "I will survive". Na minha opinião é a melhor, cheia de riffs e tem toque de humor.Como vocês surgiram com esse cover? 

Vincent DiFiore: A gravação original tem muitas partes em uma mistura, mas não tão percebida como melodia.  Nós adaptamos as partes, em seguida, nosso guitarrista escreveu um ótimo solo de blues. Isso realmente funcionou na minha opinião.

FRS: A banda está vindo para o Lollapalooza Brazil, o que o público pode esperar do show?

Vincent DiFiore: Tocaremos músicas de todos nossos álbuns. O público vai ser chamado para participar. Eles se voltaram um ao outro em uma grande experiência social.

FRS: Vocês aproveitarão para assistir outras bandas também?

Vincent DiFiore: Oh, claro que ouviremos outras bandas. Esta é a alegria de fazer parte de um excelente festival como este. 

FRS: Pode deixar uma mensagem para seus fãs brasileiros?

Vincent DiFiore: Faz tempo que tocamos no BrasiI. Muito obrigada por lembrar da gente. Faremos nosso melhor para entreter vocês.

Cake is one of the most relevant bands from the 90's. By the way, one of the curiosities about this record is that it was self-produced.

Cake is getting ready to perform at Lollapalooza Brazil 2013 and who tell us more about the history, new work and the expectation in coming back to Brazil is the trumpeter Vince DiFiore. FRS: The band's celebrated 20 years anniversary, which is the most remarkable moment in your career?

Vincent DiFiore: When Julia Roberts said "I love CAKE," on The Late Show with David Letterman.

FRS: I've read an interview which you guys said "Every album, we get better and perhaps a little bit more aggressive in our style". What do you do to keep your sound fresh and true to the style of the band?

Vincent DiFiore: We realize that we are only as good as our most recent album. We know that we have to be creative with rhythm and melody, so we focus on that. We are also careful to keep an even balance in all things.

FRS: For the latest album "Showroom of Compassion" (2011) you guys decided to build your own studio in Sacramento. Was there more freedom to work with the melody and lyrics?

Vincent DiFiore: We don't allow ourselves to become overly self-indulgent. The process remained the same, but we simply had more time to finish what we started.

FRS: Which were the main influences to this album?

Vincent DiFiore: That's hard to answer because we all bring our own influences, but the songwriting style of John's is something I hesitate to speculate on. Honestly, I can't define it.

FRS: How did you feel when "Showroom of Compassion" hit #1 on Billboard Top 200 Albums in the opening week?

Vincent DiFiore: We celebrated our #1 status. It was good to be the center of attention on the charts for a week.

FRS: Something I've always wanted to ask is about Cake's version to the song "I will survive". In my opinion is  the best one, full of riffs and a touch of humor. How did you come up with this cover?

Vincent DiFiore: The original recording has a lot of parts that are in the mix, but not noticed as much as the melody. We adapted those parts, then our guitarist wrote a great blues solo. That really makes it for me.

FRS: The band is coming to Lollapalooza Brazil, what may the audience expect from the show?

Vincent DiFiore: We play songs from all of our albums. The audience will be required to participate. They will be turned against one another in a grand social experiment.

FRS: Will you guys take the chance to watch other bands as well?

Vincent DiFiore: Oh, of course we will listen to the other bands. That is part of the joy of being a part of a great festival such as this.

FRS: Can you leave a message to your Brazilian fans?

Vincent DiFiore: It has been a long time since we have performed in Brazil. Thank you for remembering us. We will do our best to entertain you.
